Sheridan Lutheran Church has sponsored Boy Scout Troop 49 since January 31st, 1958. This year marked the 50th anniversary of our troop! Every member of Sheridan Lutheran Church should be proud of these years of continuous service to youth in our community by this congregation! The origins of Scouting within the congregation really starts earlier than 1958. Several of the charter families had boys of that age and they first sponsored Cub Scout Pack 49. Howard Olson was the first Cubmaster for Pack 49. When the boys grew older a Webelos Den was formed and then eventually the Troop was sponsored. Al Howard was the first Scoutmaster for Troop 49. There were about a dozen boys in the troop that first year. At the present time Troop 49 has seen 88 young men earn the rank of Eagle Scout (the highest rank in Boy Scouts). Today, Troop 49 has 32 young men on the rolls. There are 24 registered adults who assist with the program. The current Scoutmaster is Adam Klingenberg. Our mission as a chartered troop of the Boy Scouts of America is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participative citizenship, to develop physical, mental and emotional fitness, and to gain a respect for others, the environment and ones self. The ideals of Scouting are spelled out in the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, the motto, slogan, and outdoor code. A Scout is Reverent! This one point of the Scout Law says what we hope you will always remember about scouting. A sincere Thank You to all who have supported our Troop and Boy Scouting in the past and to those who continue to support us into the future. |
