My Story on the Dismal Canoe Trip By Tanner C. Dates 8-11-06/8-13-06
It was a long drive up to the Dismal River in Mullen, NE. It took six hours to get there. So we took several stops and the first one we took was at York at the family gas station owned by the Jenkins family. So we kept going on and on until we got there and we got out almost everybody got all these sand burs on themselves. Once we found the campsite we started to set up camp and then we ate cold meat sandwiches. Once everyone got their tents set up we went down to the river and we played in it all the way till supper time that night! For supper we had tacos and it was very good. That night it rained a lot so we all went to bed early. In the morning when everyone woke up we made breakfast, and boarded the short bus to take us to the river. When we got to the river we had to climb down this big hill with a rope. It was very muddy and again Merritt lost his shoe...it was funny! It was stunning to look at all the landscape. All the trees in the water made it hard to steer around but we got through all of it.
When we stopped for lunch there was a waterfall and at the end of it there was a deep spot so all the Scouts and Adam jumped off of it. It was fun! Then we ate and headed down stream and we kept going down stream till we got to the campsite. When we ate dinner we had spaghetti and that was very good also. We were all very tired after supper so we went to bed, we were all asleep by 7:50 PM. The next morning we got up and ate breakfast and got in the canoe and we were off paddling. We canoed four hours down stream and so we ate and waited for the truck to come and pick us up. When he got there we looked in his car and it looked very rickety! So we got in and it was very rough going down the road, when we got to our campsite we packed up our gear and we left to come home to Lincoln, NE. |
